  • The Cambridge Ancient History, vol 13 and 14 (REF D57 .C252) This book has incredibly detailed information about politics, culture, and society during late roman antiquity.  Start in the Table of Contents for either volume to figure out which sections would be best to read.  Each book also has an index.
  • Augustine Through The Ages: An Encyclopedia (REF B655 .Z69 A84 1999)  Also contains much social, cultural, and historical information about this period.
  • Encyclopedia of Chicago (Ref. F548.3 .E53 2004) You could find some more recent historical information for some communities here. For the online version of this: http://www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org
