Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction

Steve Kretzmann spends most of his time in Madison , Wisconsin, where he frequently sits in a cubicle at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. When he is there, he attempts to help parents and communities break down barriers that too often prevent them from participating in the governance of their public schools. He also encourages school personnel to be more welcoming toward those efforts.

Born and raised in the Chicago area, Steve still considers Chicago his home town. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin - Madison in United States history, with concentrations in community, social, and environmental history. In the past, he has taught a variety of history courses at the UW, campaigned for many losing-and a few winning-political candidates, worked on several academic and political research projects, worked for an insurance company, and driven a cab. He lives with his wife Deb, his daughter Claire, and Claire's menagerie-Choco the dog, Princess and Squeaky the guinea pigs, and Flutter the goldfish.
